Major Component Description
Air Compressor
The air compressor is the source of energy for the air brake system. Its function is to
provide and maintain air under pressure to operate devices in the air brake and auxil-
iary air systems. It is driven by the vehicle engine through a gear drive, and utilizes the
engine’s lubrication and cooling system. The compressor is a reciprocating piston type
that features automatic inlet and discharge valves and an unloading mechanism. Since
the compressor is driven direct off the engine accessory drive, it is operating continu-
ously while the engine is running. Actual compression of the air is controlled by the
compressor unloading mechanism and the governor.
